Governor General Literary Awards

While Joseph Boyden won a well deserved Giller Prize for Through Black Spruce, and Miriam Toews picked up the Rogers Writer's Trust Fiction Prize for The Flying Troutmans, two other great books won Govenor General Literary Awards this week.

Nino Ricci won his second GG for his wonderful book The Origin of Species; and John Ibbitson, the Globe & Mail's American political columnist won for his Young Adult book The Landing. I just reviewed that for the Globe (out this weekend) and found it to be a most lovely story of the life of an adolescent boy whose life changes dramatically one summer in Muskoka during the Depression. Very well written and poignantly told.

I love book awards, they offer encouragement to writers, necessary funds to help them continue and a boost to book sales. The deeper I move into my own writing life the more I can appreciate what this kind of recognition and practical help must mean to these writers.

Congrats.
